While writing my middle-grade novel, I drew cats of all kinds: domestic and wild, native and exotic, small and large... and at large in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Isn't it amazing how they can both dominate a landscape and disappear into it?
I recently wandered into the world of chess—a male-dominated sphere, where, to my surprise, I found centuries of stories featuring female players. And like pawns advancing toward queenship, women gained status through success on the board. I'm eager to share the herstory of chess with young readers.
If positive thinking elevates you, could small, nagging fears cut you right down to size? Right before the big game?! This comic exploration of stature, created for a California College of Arts anthology, is a stretch for me as an artist-in-training. But I'm armed with a digital pencil, Procreate, and the challenge to think big.
